Magi school rehabilitation

A twinning programme promoting international solidarity

The school in the village of Magi, located in southern Rwanda, has nearly 1,400 pupils in 20 classes from nursery school to Year 6.

In order to accommodate all pupils, children attend school on a half-day basis. Families live within a 5 km radius of the school, and children do not hesitate to walk up to 10 km a day to attend classes.

Built in the 1930s, the school consists of a dozen buildings arranged around a large central courtyard. As is often the case on the African continent, the school lacks the funding to maintain itself, which could ultimately jeopardise its ability to accommodate pupils.

In 2018, the Etablissement Supérieur Catholique Rochois (ESCR) launched a twinning and solidarity project with the Magi school.

Since then, the buildings have been renovated, a drinking water fountain has been installed, a toilet block has been built and a lot of school equipment has been delivered to the site.
This work has greatly improved the conditions for pupils at the school.

The project also enabled the recruitment of a specialised teacher in 2021, allowing the opening of a class dedicated to children with intellectual disabilities, which is very rare in these rural schools.

We are pleased to have contributed to the financing of part of the renovation work.
